A series of intimate wedding photos showing hands, silhouettes and romantic moments in warm, moody lighting.

If the idea of spending your wedding day being constantly posed makes you cringe, you’re probably looking for documentary wedding photography.

I’m Katie, a Liverpool-based documentary wedding photographer, photographing weddings across the UK and beyond for couples who want their day captured as it actually felt, not staged for the camera.

What Is Documentary Wedding Photography?

Documentary wedding photography is about real moments, not directions.

Instead of interrupting your day with endless posing, I focus on:

  • Genuine interactions
  • Unscripted emotions
  • The in-between moments you didn’t even realise were happening

From nervous hands before the ceremony to the chaos on the dance floor — the story unfolds naturally, and I quietly document it as it happens.

If you want photos that feel honest, emotional, and timeless, documentary photography lets your wedding day be exactly that.

Wedding guests dance and celebrate together outdoors at a rustic reception venue during sunset.

We hate posing and feel awkward infront of the camera what type of wedding photographer should we book?

If the thought of being told where to stand, what to do with your hands, or how to “act natural” makes you uncomfortable, you’re not alone. Most of the couples I photograph feel exactly the same way.

If you hate posing and feel awkward in front of the camera, a documentary-style wedding photographer is usually the best fit.

Documentary wedding photography focuses on real moments rather than instructions. Instead of being constantly directed, you’re free to enjoy your day while your photographer quietly captures what’s happening as it naturally unfolds.

That means:

  • No forced poses
  • No performing for the camera
  • No pressure to be anything other than yourselves

You’ll spend your time with your guests, not worrying about photos, and the images you receive will reflect how the day felt, not how well you posed.

When it comes to couple portraits, I offer gentle guidance rather than rigid posing, so you’re never left feeling unsure or uncomfortable. Most couples tell me they forgot about the camera entirely, which is exactly the point.

If you want wedding photos that feel relaxed, honest, and true to you, without the awkwardness, documentary photography is often the perfect choice.

You don’t need to know how to pose, for beautiful wedding photographs.

You just need to show up and enjoy your day.

You just need to show up and enjoy your day.

A Natural, Storytelling Approach to Wedding Photography

My approach is calm, unobtrusive, and rooted in storytelling.

I don’t force moments or ask you to “act natural.”

I let things happen and photograph them truthfully.

You’ll never be asked to:

  • Re-enact moments
  • Perform for the camera
  • Spend hours away from your guests

Instead, you get a collection of images that reflect:

  • Who you are
  • How your day felt
  • The people and moments that mattered most

What Working With Me Is Like

On your wedding day, I blend in, more like a guest with a camera than a traditional photographer.

I’ll:
> Capture the full story from start to finish
> Step in only when needed
> Guide you gently during couple portraits without stiff posing

Most couples tell me they barely noticed I was there until they saw their photos.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do you travel for weddings outside Liverpool?

Yes, I photograph weddings across the UK and internationally.

Do you do any posing at all?

I prefer gentle natural guidance when needed rather than posing, especially during couple portraits, but the focus is always on natural movement and connection. I won't leave you hanging not knowing what to do, but I also won't have you awkwardly staring into my camera or asking you to smile at me.

We’re nervous about being photographed, is that okay?

Absolutely. Most of my couples feel the same way at this stage but end up having fun on the day, which is exactly why documentary photography works so well.

What does documentary wedding photography look like?

Documentary wedding photography looks like real life unfolding, rather than a series of staged moments.

It means your photographs are made up of:

  • Natural interactions instead of poses
  • Real emotions as they happen
  • Movement, laughter, nerves, and quiet moments in between

You won’t be asked to perform or act for the camera. Instead, I observe what’s happening and photograph it honestly, from the big, emotional moments to the small details you might not notice on the day.

Your gallery will include:

  • Guests reacting during the ceremony
  • Unscripted moments between you and the people you love
  • The atmosphere of the day, exactly as it felt
  • Imperfect, beautiful moments that tell the full story

The result is a collection of images that feel personal, emotive, and timeless. Not overly polished or forced, but true to your day.

What my couples say

"We honestly couldn’t recommend Katie enough as a wedding photographer. From the very beginning she was professional, friendly, and instantly put us at ease, which made such a difference on the day. She has such a natural way of capturing not only the beautiful planned shots but also the candid, unexpected moments that we would have otherwise missed.

The day goes by so quickly, and there are so many little details you don’t get to see — but thanks to Katie, we now have those moments to look back on forever. Every photo tells a story and brings back the emotions of the day so perfectly. We feel incredibly lucky to have had her capture our wedding and will treasure these photographs for years to come.

Thank you - Shaunna & Mattie xx"
